Margao civic body faces backlash as server glitches leave locals annoyed

MARGAO: Citizens residing within the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) jurisdiction are expressing their dissatisfaction with the recurrent problems affecting the MMC’s server and online services.

In the last week, the MMC’s server was down, due to which citizens who were visiting the MMC office, were unable to make their tax payments and were forced to return home.

While on Friday, to assist the citizens, especially senior citizens the officials in the payment section accepted cash payments manually, the onus of responsibility has been put on the National Informatics Centre (NIC).

According to sources, a technical snag has developed which was affecting the server.

MMC officials stated that they had given the NIC officials reminders to address the issue as soon as possible. Earlier this week, locals complained that despite the rain and their schedule at work, they had taken time off to visit the MMC and were annoyed that they were asked to return again.

They added that this is an inconvenience and it is difficult to come on another date. Locals called on the MMC to streamline the system and see that they are able to pay their house tax soon and lamented that this is not the first time such an issue had occurred and it is likely that there will be similar problems in the future.

They demanded that be it NIC or the MMC’s Information Technology (IT) teams find a solution wherein such server issues are resolved within hours and not days at a stretch.   They also called on the MMC to make better arrangements given that there will be long queues as well.

The fact the online services were not functioning properly was also criticized by the locals, who questioned who is monitoring the system given that this too has been a recurring issue.
