MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council has taken action against households and commercial establishments found responsible for releasing sewage into drains and open fields in Navelim. Show cause notices have been issued to around 50 entities, warning of potential disconnection of water and electricity supply.
This issue has been a topic of discussion for several years, with ongoing inspections and a court case initiated by Prof Antonio Alvares from Navelim. Despite inspections directed by the court, the problem persists, and sewage continues to flow into drains and fields, polluting agricultural land and the River Sal.
The civic body has issued show cause notices to numerous households and commercial establishments in the past. However, both the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) and the Goa State Pollution Control Board failed to submit compliance reports to the High Court by the specified date, requesting additional time to do so.
Gaurish Sankhwalkar, the MMC Chief Officer, informed that nearly 50 commercial establishments have been identified for potential power disconnection due to their direct discharge of raw sewage into water drains and fields. Many of these establishments, including hotels, have shown disregard for the pollution caused by their actions.
