MARGAO: A special meeting of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) turned stormy over the issue of renting out the shops of Gandhi Market by not following the correct procedure.
Ghanashyam Shirodkar, councillor also alleged scams, and demanded to revoke the permissions given to the shop owners.
The civic body had called a special meeting on Wednesday to discuss the Shigmo celebration. However, Ghanashaym raised the issue pertaining to shops, which later created havoc in the meeting.

“It has been revealed that a few shops at Gandhi Market, belonging to the civic body, have been rented out without following proper procedure, besides based on the valuation done in 2007”, alleged Ghanashyam.
He further said that shops are rented out for mere amounts of Rs 4000 to Rs 5000, wherein the value is calculated to Rs 15,000, and hence it is total loss to the civic body.
“These illegalities have been done to favour a few and that too by taking advantage of the election code of conduct. I have doubts that the members of the market committee are involved in this scam, besides the chief officer and chairperson”, alleged Ghanashyam.
Reacting to the issue Chairperson Lyndon Pereira assured inquiry into the matter.
Few other councillors also supported Ghanashyam, and demanded inquiry into the matter.
