Margao civic body partners with Mayem NGO to impound stray cattle

MARGAO: Recognising the nuisance and rising number of accidents caused by stray cattle, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with an NGO from Mayem to initiate a campaign aimed at impounding stray cattle.

As confirmed by Damodar Shirodkar, the Chairperson of MMC, the drive to apprehend stray cattle from the roads, footpaths, and public spaces within the civic body’s jurisdiction commenced on September 2. This initiative falls under the stray cattle management scheme, as part of MMC’s collaboration with the Gomantak Gosevak Mahasang, Sikeri-Mayem.

The issue of stray cattle in Margao has posed significant problems for motorists, leading to numerous accidents. Several motorists have suffered injuries due to encounters with stray cattle on the road, particularly during nighttime. Recently, a lawyer from Navelim served a legal notice to the MMC, warning of potential contempt proceedings if the council failed to address the stray cattle menace on National Highway 66 in Margao.

The concerned lawyer underscored the authorities’ negligence in tackling the menace posed by stray cattle, which jeopardizes the safety of schoolchildren, commuters, and other travelers on NH 66. These stray cattle freely roam on public roads and highways, posing a threat to public safety and causing road accidents and fatalities.

Citizens have stressed the importance of keeping public roads and highways clear of obstructions like stray cattle, emphasizing that road safety is paramount and aligns with the right to life guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.
