Margao civic body passes 3 resolutions on Sonsoddo

MARGAO:  At a special council meeting of the Margao Municipal Council , three resolutions were passed to resolve problems with the Sonsoddo Waste Treatment Plant.

All three resolutions were about MMC writing to the DMA to use the 14th Finance Commission Funds. The first was to construct an RCC wall that would replace the broken wall of the plant’s shed, which MMC engineers said was of poor quality to begin with and that another part of the shed’s wall could collapse soon too. The second was to repair a non-functional transformer that would provide much needed electrical supply to the plant. MMC engineers explained that the estimate of Rs 49 lakh had been vetted by the Power Department.

The final resolution was to get the Goa State Waste Management Corporation (GSWMC) to remove the 15,000 tonnes of mixed waste lying inside the plant.

It was revealed that after the fire at Sonsoddo, the South Collector, MMC and GSWMC met where it was agreed that the Corporation would take out the piled up garbage.

The wall collapsed five days after that meeting. However, councillors lamented that MMC was going to spend so much to remove the waste from inside the shed even though it had spent Rs 84 lakh from the FCC, years ago to remove the entire waste collected inside the plant.
