Margao civic body struggles to dispose of grass clippings and shrubbery waste

MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) is facing challenges in disposing of waste generated from trimmed bushes and grass clippings. The councillors have expressed their dismay, stating that the MMC has asked them to identify suitable land within their respective wards for waste disposal, which they find to be an impossible task.

The recent directives from the High Court to halt waste dumping near the Kadamba bus stand in Fatorda have exacerbated the issue. Previously, the MMC used this area to dump waste such as coconut leaves, shrubbery, and grass clippings from the 25 wards.

Damodar Shirodkar, Chairperson of the MMC, has suggested that councillors identify land within their wards for waste disposal. This proposition has been met with resistance from the city fathers, who argue that it is the civic body’s responsibility to find suitable disposal locations.

Ghanashyam Shirodkar, a councillor, emphasised that it is unfair to burden councillors with the task of finding land for waste disposal. He added that the absence of designated dumping sites for bushes and grass clippings has resulted in the wards looking untidy, with weeding and maintenance works delayed for several days.

Similarly, Camilo Barretto, another councillor, mentioned that while the issue of coconut palms disposal has been resolved with the installation of a crushing machine for leaves at the Sonsoddo dump site,

MMC councillors are struggling to manage the waste generated from trimming and cleaning of overgrown public areas.

Barretto called on the MMC Chairperson to take the initiative in identifying suitable land for this specific waste disposal. Presently, tree branches, cut bushes, and grass clippings can be seen piled up in various locations due to the MMC’s inability to remove them.
