MARGAO: In a bid to ease citizens’ struggles during the monsoon season, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has planned to deploy a dedicated disaster management team. MMC Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar announced that the team, consisting of eight to ten members, will be well-equipped and ready to run rescue operations without having to wait for the fire and emergency services.

Margao has experienced flooding and fallen trees, resulting in hardships for its citizens. To alleviate this, the MMC has begun the process of de-silting gutters and cleaning the city before the monsoon season starts. “Earlier, pre-monsoon works would start after the arrival of the monsoon. However, now we have already completed the process of floating tenders, and hence all the works pertaining to cleaning of gutters will be completed much before the monsoon,” said Shirodkar.

The disaster management team will collaborate with the fire and emergency services to ensure safety and timely response to citizens’ emergencies. MMC has already issued work orders for de-silting gutters, and each contractor has been allotted pre-monsoon work in three wards. They are being urged to start work and not wait until the last minute. Councillors have also been informed about the works and requested to follow up on the matter.

“The MMC has witnessed difficulties faced by the fire and emergency services in attending to all calls during the monsoon season, resulting in hardship to the citizens,” Shirodkar noted. With the deployment of the disaster management team, citizens can rest assured that there will be a quick and efficient response to any emergencies that arise during the monsoon season, he added.
