MARGAO: No timely payment from the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) was an issue in the past pertaining to organising the traditional Carnival “khell” during the four-day festival. However, a team headed by Chief Officer (CO) of MMC, Agnelo Fernandes, has decided not to deny entertainment to the “khell” lovers, and will go ahead in organising the traditional “khell” in all the 25 wards of the civic body.
Speaking to Herald, Fernandes said that they have already received two quotations from the two groups of “khell” producers, and the final decision will be taken on February 21, Monday.
“Yes, people of Margao and the ‘khell’ lovers will surely get a chance to enjoy the carnival in a traditional way. We have already planned to organise traditional ‘khell’ in all the 25 wards of the civic body,” he said.
“The organising committee is planning to make a budget of minimum Rs 5 lakh to organise the traditional ‘khell’ in the town. The traditional ‘khell’ will commence from February 25 and end on February 27. ‘Khells’ will be held in all the wards,” the CO said.
It may be recalled that there was an issue pertaining to the payment of “khell” producers, and many directors and producers had expressed anger over the issue. There were around 12 directors who were given the contract to stage “khell” in the municipal wards and as per the agreement they were promised to be paid within three months.
Putting the past behind, the CO has decided to make provision of the funds so that there will be no issue pertaining to the payment of the “khell” producers.
