Margao civic body to ramp up action against dumping of garbage at black spots

MARGAO: Following a barrage of complaints from citizens, the Margao Municipal Council has decided to crack the whip on miscreants dumping garbage at the town’s black spots.

MMC Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar said he would personally conduct an inspection of all the public places prone to being littered. He added that the Council had recently nabbed a person from Benaulim dumping garbage in Comba, Margao, and added that the civic body was going to insist that an FIR be filed against him.

The unchecked dumping of garbage in public spaces has been criticized by citizen groups. Questions have also been raised about the efficiency of the door-to-door collection system and the value of the stop-gap measures to deal with this. “The civic body has received several complaints, and people also call me personally expressing their anger over the issue,” said Shirodkar.

It is pertinent to note that in 2021, the civic body had identified nearly 60 black spots across the town. “Unless surveillance is maintained at the black spots and violators penalised, the nuisance will not end,” he added.
