MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council has decided to request the Tourism Department to increase the funds allocated to Carnival and Shigmo, along with the provision of advance payments to prevent inconvenience to participating groups. In a special meeting held on Friday, the MMC also resolved to grant full powers to the Chairperson to appoint committees for the Carnival and Shigmo festivals in Margao.
“The organising committee is facing a tough time making payments to participating groups due to the untimely release of funds from the tourism department. We will now insist not only on increasing the funds but also on providing advances so that bills are paid on time,” said Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar. The float parade route for Carnival and Shigmo will be from Holy Spirit Church to the Municipal Building Square, he said. Additionally, he mentioned that the desilting of gutters and nullahs in preparation for the monsoon will commence at the end of February, at a cost of Rs seven lakh, by engaging additional labourers.
