MARGAO: The daily wage workers of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) staged a protest on Labour Day and did not report to work on Sunday as the civic body failed to renew their work order, which expired on April 30.
On Sunday, a large number of daily wage workers during the protest questioned the MMC why it failed to renewed or extend their work order instead of allowing it to lapse on April 30.
They also protested the fact that they were denied a hike in daily wages for the last four months even though as per the rules they were to receive a higher amount from January 1 onwards.
The MMC supervisor spoke to the civic body chief and a decision was taken only to utilise municipality’s permanent workers and drivers to carry out various labour works.
The MMC supervisor said he had informed his higherups 15 days in advance about this situation and added that the paper work with regards to approval to issue a new work order was ready. He said that the MMC Chairperson Lyndon Pereira had informed him that this issue would be taken up on Monday and that the new work order is likely to be issued on May 3.
