MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Y B Tavde has appealed to all people to participate wholeheartedly in the Carnival celebrations to make it a resounding success.
Tavde is the chairman of the Margao Carnival Committee.
As the model code of conduct is still in force in Goa, politicians and more particularly councilors cannot visibly be involved in organising the festival and hence the committee consists of only bureaucrats with Municipal Engineer Surendra Gaonkar as the Secretary and Accounts Officer Damodar Elekar as the treasurer.
The Carnival float parade will be held on February 26, at 4.30 pm from the Old Market circle and proceed to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium via the Ravindra Bhavan. Sitting arrangements will be made from the Old Market circle right up to the Ravindra Bhavan on the right hand side of the road while the parade will use the left hand side of the road.
Floats will be held in six categories which are traditional, club/institution, family, sponsor, fun junk and clown/joker. Prize money amounting to Rs 6 lakh which has been sanctioned by the State government, will be distributed to the prize winners in each of the categories.
In the traditional category, the first prize is of Rs 75,000, second prize of Rs 60,000, third prize of Rs 45,000, fourth prize of Rs 30,000 and fifth prize of Rs 15,000. Besides, there will be four consolation prizes of Rs 5,000 each.
In the Club/Institution category, the first prize is of Rs 50,000, second prize of Rs 40,000, third prize of Rs 30,000, fourth prize of Rs 20,000 and fifth prize of Rs 12,000. Four consolation prizes of Rs 4000 each will also be given.
For the Fun Junk and Family categories, the first prize is Rs 20,000, second prize is Rs 18,000, third prize is Rs 10,000, fourth prize is Rs 8,000 and fifth prize is Rs 5000. Besides, there will be four consolation prizes in each category of Rs 1,500 each.
In the clown/joker category the first prize is Rs 12,000, second prize is Rs 9,000, third prize is Rs 7,000, fourth prize is Rs 5,000 and fifth prize is Rs 3,000. Four consolation prizes of Rs 1,000 each will also be awarded.
Besides, the committee has arranged to stage khell tiatr at the Ana Fonte garden and also all the wards of the council from February 24 through February 29, except on February 26, when the float parade will be held in Margao.
Various committees like screening, refreshment, pandal, volunteers, dresses, etc., have also been formed to organize the festival in a smooth manner.
