MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Siddhivinayak Naik has complained to the Goa State Pollution Control Board about the medical waste from a leading hospital in Margao that was dumped by the roadside at Monte Hill on November 1 late evening.
It may be recalled that the chief officer had promised stringent action against those responsible for dumping the medical waste by the roadside and claims that a complaint has also been lodged before the Margao town police.
Sources in MMC disclosed that the council is going a little soft on these transgressors as the council has failed to provide any facility for dealing with medical waste. Incidentally, Margao has 252 clinics and 45 hospitals that generate medical waste everyday but MMC has no mechanism to check what is done with this medical waste.
The government is in the process of setting up a medical waste treatment facility at Kundaim, but that will take at least another two years. Meanwhile, it is learnt that the government is negotiating with Karnataka to use the medical treatment facility set up near Ankola, close to the Goa border.
