MARGAO: Citizens of Margao and Fatorda confronted municipal Chief Officer Yashwant Tawde demanding the handing over of the kabrastan land to the developer for speedy development of the burial land. The citizens have expressed anger over the inordinate delay in the completion of work.
Fr Maverick Fernandes, Director of Caritas, along with Abdul Matin Karol and others confronted Tawde demanding handing over of the acquired land near Sonsodo for kabrastan.
The citizens have decided to meet the chief officer again on Friday to discuss the matter threadbare with him to iron out any potential roadblocks.
The citizens will demand an immediate solution to the kabrastan issue, which has been pending since the last 17 years. “We demand to know why our fundamental right to a decent burial should be denied?” asked Abdul Matin Karol.
Fr Fernandes said that for the last 23 years the Muslim brethren of Margao are waiting for a new kabrastan, the Muslims are presently using the kabrastan in Pajifond which is very old and is completely saturated decades ago. There is no room whatsoever to bury the dead in dignity and now they have begun to crush stone and create space to bury the dead. The land at Sonsodo had hit roadblock when the Raia Fabrica objected to the development of the land claiming that the land belongs to the Fabrica.
Now the pressure is bound to increase on the MMC as this has also been a poll promise of both the ruling panels.
