Margao Council transports nearly 1,118 tonnes of RDF to cement factories

MARGAO: Following the High Court directions, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has transported nearly 1,118 tonnes of RDF to the cement factories in the neighbouring states and on an average nearly 20 tonnes of wet waste is being disposed at the Cacora waste treatment plant. 

The above figures indicate that with no other option left for the civic body stressing on fulfilling the deadlines given by the court. 

On the other hand, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat had stated that the much discussed issue of Sonsoddo will be resolved by January -2024 and people will witness a turnaround. 

As informed by the Gaurish Sankhwalkar, Chief Officer, the civic body is monitoring the operations pertaining to the Sonsodo waste on a day today basis and the records are being submitted to the concerned authorities on a regular basis. 

“We have been witnessing lots of changes at Sonsodo and also with regard to the waste management in the jurisdiction of the Municipality. Even, the issue pertaining to dumping of waste on the roadside is being tackled systematically,” he stated. CO further stated that they take up the issue seriously with regard to garbage being dumped in the Municipal area at the borders by the people from neighbouring villages. 

The records state that following the directions of the High Court, the civic body has hired three trucks to transport the wet waste and temporary electricity is being restored for operation of bailing machines at Sonsodo. 

On an average 25 tonnes of wet waste is being transported to Saligao waste treatment plant from July 13 to November 20. The amount of waste is reduced since the disposing of the wet waste has started at Cacora. 

As informed by the Chief Officer, the compost area is made available by shifting of the existing material from the compost area; however, the compost area is not sufficient to accommodate 5,000 MTs of matured wet waste. 

Repair and construction of eastern side plinth wall and construction of drainage system with platform for windrow composting at Sonsoddo is 90 percent completed. 

Till November 20, the civic body managed to bailed 3,650 tonnes of dry waste.
