MARGAO: Claiming that an illegal scrap yard at Khareband, Margao has resulted in a waste dumping site, Councillor Mahesh Amonkar urged the Chief Officer of Margao Municipal Council to take action against the scrap yard at the earliest and also warned of agitation.
Speaking to the media Amonkar said that the illegal scrap yard in the locality has created a mess, which has now turned into a major waste dumping site.
“We have noticed people travelling to Benaulim, Cavelossim, Varca and Carmona crossing Khareband Bridge throwing their garbage bags near the scrap yard, inviting stray cattle at the site. This often causes accidents at the late evening hours,” said Amonkar.
The councillor further alleged that this scrap yard has prompted the people to throw garbage at the site.
“I had given a written complaint against the illegal scrap yard a month ago but no action has been taken by the municipality. We don’t want the Chief Officer to promote such type of activities by not taking any action,” he stated.
Amonkar said that the Margao Municipal Council had acted in quick time when one of the councillors from Madel complained about the illegal kiosk installed near the KTC bus stand. Why no action against the illegal scrap yard which has created nuisance in Khareband?, asked the councillor.
The councillor has given a one week’s time to the Chief Officer to act on the illegal scrap yard.
