Margao councillor calls for action against illegally parked rent-a-bike vehicles

MARGAO: Calling for action to be taken against the rent-a-bike vehicles being parked in municipal property, Margao councillor Mahesh Amonkar questioned how such bikes are being allowed to be parked there, when the common man struggles to find parking in the town.

Amonkar also questioned what the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) and RTO have been doing, given that this is happening under their jurisdiction.

It may be recalled that when rent-a-bike vehicles were being parked near the MMC building, councillors had taken up the issue, following which instructions were given to the Margao traffic cell not to allow these vehicles to park in that area. Action was also taken against those rent-a-bike vehicles that continued to park there despite the warnings.

Amonkar added that now the rent-a-bike operators are directly parking their vehicles in the municipal property itself, which is a bigger issue. He gave the example of how the public can’t park their vehicles in front of the MMC building and that sometimes councillors themselves can’t find parking there.

He then questioned how the rules were being relaxed for the rent-a-bike-operators.

While demanding that the bikes be removed from municipal property immediately, Amonkar also said if the RTO officials were deliberately turning a blind eye to this issue, then the Transport Department has to take action against them.
