Margao councillors slam CO over nil progress

MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Naveen L came under severe criticism from the councillors for failing to forward their development-related projects.

They raised the issue in a meeting with Rajya Sabha MP, Shantaram Naik, at the MMC Chairperson Arthur D’Silva’s chambers on Wednesday. The CO, however, was absent.
At the meeting, councillor Tito Cardozo informed Naik that after representations made to the MP in the past, he had followed due procedure and submitted a proposal to be taken up under the MPLAD scheme in Borda. He pointed out that even though the MMC had cleared the project in 2014, it was stuck as the CO had not completed the procedures that were mandatory for any project under the MPLAD scheme.
Naik promised he would take up the matter after going through the documents, which the CO was to move to the collector’s office.
Cardozo lamented that the public vented their anger at the councillors for not doing any work, when in reality they had actually submitted proposals. He said, “I have sent three reminders, but still nothing.”
The councillors also demanded a full-time chief officer, who would help expedite development works that were stuck due to procedural lapses.
