Margao death triggers response from authorities

MARGAO: Following the death of senior citizen Pedro Antonio Gauncar (72) after falling into a clogged and overflowing stormwater drain, officials of the South Goa District Collectorate rushed to the site on Thursday and took stock of the situation.

Upon the instruction of the Collector Jyoti Kumari, Mamlatdar Lakshmikant Dessai along with talathi of Raia Village panchayat Varsha Tendulkar visited the site.

Speaking to Herald, Prasad Panandikar, Executive Engineer of PWD said that they had carried out cleaning of the gutters just 25 days before with the estimated cost of Rs. 35,000 and the submerging of the roads due to the rains is mainly due to the clogged nullahs at Pepsi junction.

It is pertinent to note, however, that witnesses claim that Curtorim MLA Alexio Reginaldo Lourenco had initiated the work of cleaning and clearing choked drainage through PWD after the unfortunate incident.
