MARGAO: The rush of vehicles on the Konkan Railway flyover at Margao has resulted in yet another rubber coupling at the joint getting dislodged due to which only half of one lane of the bridge has its joint covered with the coupling.
Three joints of the flyover are covered with rubber coupling and each joint has seven pairs of couplings. While one pair of coupling on the joint towards Navelim had gone off long back, the Christmas shopping rush resulted in one adjoining coupling getting dislodged on Sunday.
It may be recalled that when TCP Minister Vijai Sardessai had visited the Margao Municipal Council on November 6, the repairs of this flyover that has even developed cracks at places was raised and Vijai had instructed the Traffic Police to close down the flyover for 24 hours to enable PWD to carry out the repairs.
Traffic Police Inspector Mohan Gaude revealed that the Public Works Department had subsequently informed that they would get a contractor who would carry out the repairs in three hours, but that has not happened as yet and now another coupling has got dislodged.
Lamenting the casual attitude the authorities have to such serious issues, MMC’s former chairperson Savio Coutinho said the situation would only turn from bad to worse. “Now that sewerage work is going on at the Navelim side of the approach road, the repairs of the bridge will be delayed till it is completed,” he said.
