Margao Industrial Estate scrapyards go unchecked

Recycled plastic stored in a scrap yard could fuel a fire because of the manner in which it is stored rather close to a fuse box

The scrapyards in the southeastern corner of Margao industrial estate are operating by flouting safety norms. One scrap yard operates in a shed which is filled with the recycled plastic up to the roof. The flammables plastic material is placed dangerously close to the main electrical fuse/switch box. On the outside of the shed, hundreds of plastic sacks and barrels are stacked, the load of which caused a section of the  7 feet compound wall to collapse. This shed is operated by one Amil Lal.
In another scrapyard, a shredded plastic filled in polythene sacks are stacked up to a height of 8 feet. In the centre of the shed, around 6 women employees were busy shredding and packing the plastic. The women informed that there were no Fire extinguishers in the shed. The shed is operated by K.G.N Enterprises on plot no C4/1, Phase II. A third scrapyard was operating nearby by a family who is living inside the scrapyard. There was garbage stacked outside the compound of the scrapyard what was partially burnt. There were heaps of glass bottles, mixed plastic trash and other hazardous material lying everywhere. Sources in the Goa State Pollution Control board who informed that the scrap years may not be having the Consent to Operate certificate and if they do, that they are violating the guidelines stated in the certificate
