Margao kabarastan issue: HC to take MMC to task, hearing fixed on Dec 21

MARGAO: Going through the facts, the Margao Municipal Council and political leaders are in tight spot to resolve the long pending demand of Muslim community’s kabarastan and the controversy of alleged changing of zone of the land acquired at Sonsoddo and identifying a new site has now resulted in further mess. 

It will be interesting to note that the kabarastan saga revolves around over an interval of 10 year’s each. First in 1999, then in 2009 and the latest being 2019. 

Herald further revealed that the MMC is going to face a tough time in coming days, when the High Court will take the civic body to task over the issue, wherein the Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes needs to remain present on the next hearing that is fixed on December 21, to clarify on the issue.  

Speaking to Herald, Margao locals alleged that there is no dedication to resolve the issue and divisions amongst the Muslim community, besides oppositions from the people of other community has deprived many from burial with dignity. 

Will the civic body, who is in possession of the acquired land at Sonsoddo will be able to resolve it as per the demands of the Muslim community or will the MMC will be capable enough to implement the guidelines of the High Court, if directed, is a big questioned mark. 

Speaking to Herald MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said, “The matter is pending before the High Court for a very long time and the civic body is trying hard to resolve it.” 

“The next hearing before the High Court has been fixed on December 21, and now everything will depend on the court orders,” he stated.
