MARGAO: Expressing their frustration with illegal encroachments on footpaths, concerned citizens of Margao are calling on the Margao Municipal Council to take swift action against those responsible for these violations.
Around the markets owned by the Municipality, it has become a common sight to witness vendors and shop owners encroaching upon footpaths, causing significant inconvenience to pedestrians. The encroachments have resulted in obstructed public access, prompting residents to demand stringent measures against shop owners involved in these violations.
Kiran Borkar, a frequent visitor to the market area, has called for decisive action from the MMC to address this issue. He stressed that these encroachments have blocked public pathways, making it difficult for pedestrians to navigate the area.
Footpath encroachments have become a prevalent issue in various areas, including in front of Bombay Cafe, Sadekar Lane, Old Station Road, and even in the vicinity of the municipal building.
Joaquim Dias, another concerned citizen, highlighted the recurring problem of encroachments in Margao. He pointed out that despite municipal officials being present at the site, large boxes and various goods often occupy the footpaths. Dias believes that the civic body should conduct regular enforcement drives and impose substantial fines on vendors and shop owners engaged in illegal encroachment.
In response to these concerns, Santo Fernandes, the Market Inspector, assured the public that the Margao civic body is already conducting regular drives to address footpath encroachments. He further emphasised that action will be taken against those responsible for blocking footpaths and hindering public access.
