Margao MLA now faces Opposition ire over restaurant in parking facility

MARGAO: At an inspection held at the garbage treatment plant and site for the substation at Sonsoddo on Saturday, the opposition councillors criticised Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) over the proposed addition of a restaurant on top of the upcoming pay-parking facility.

They also hit out at the MLA for pushing all garbage related issues into wards located outside Margao’s jurisdiction and his failure to address the Sonsoddo issue despite his involvement in multiple ‘failed’ projects at the garbage treatment facility and legacy dump site. At the inspection where Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai and Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco were present, they took stock of recent measures being taken at Sonsoddo and also the potential problems concerning the land required for the substation.

Thereafter, Sardesai along with a group of Fatorda councillors including former Chairperson Lyndon Pereira, questioned who would stand to benefit from setting up a restaurant on top of the pay parking facility and demanded that it should be made clear who was responsible for putting and clearing this proposal.

Sardesai accused Kamat of further sabotaging the infrastructure of Margao, which he said is already in shambles, for the benefit of commercial interests and not the town.

The MLA, while adding that it is time to put up a challenge for Kamat’s long reign as the Margao MLA, added that having a restaurant on top of the pay-parking facility would create additional burden on the parking requirements as guests coming to the restaurant would park at the facility, thus denying crucial parking space to the common man.

He added that at a time when the parking project would have helped alleviate the traffic congestion in the town, this latest move would defeat that purpose.  On Friday, MMC councillors had slammed the move, claiming that they were kept in the dark about the restaurant proposal.
