Margao municipal workers took action on Wednesday to clear encroachments in the textile lane of the town’s new market area. The team removed encroachments within the market premises and along the roadside. Various items displayed for sale on footpaths and roads were confiscated during the operation.
This move follows an embarrassing revelation during an exercise to locate space for an overhead water tank in the New Market and Gandhi Market for fire safety measures. Margao civic officials were left humiliated as district authorities and police discovered widespread encroachments right under the oversight of the municipal body. Market inspectors were directed to caution traders in the New Market to confine their merchandise within their stalls during officials’ visits, warning of seizure for non-compliance.
