Margao Municipality directed to halt dumping of waste near KTC

Councillors also tasked with tackling waste such as debris, coconut palms and mud from their wards more efficiently

MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) is confronted with yet another challenge in its ongoing battle with garbage management. Following orders from concerned authorities, the civic body has been instructed to halt the dumping of mixed waste in an open area near the Kadamba Bus Stand in Fatorda.

In response to this directive, a meeting was convened on Friday evening to address the issue. During the meeting, supervisors were tasked with ensuring strict compliance with the order, and councillors were urged to prioritise the segregation of waste in their respective wards. Additionally, the council emphasised the need to manage waste such as debris, mud, and coconut palm leaves more effectively.

The dumping of mixed waste at the Kadamba Bus Stand site had led to considerable inconvenience and nuisance in the locality. Recent complaints from concerned citizens, including those from Madel, highlighted the health hazards posed by the disposal and burning of waste in the area.

Sources reveal that higher authorities responded to petitions filed by citizens and issued directives to MMC, instructing them to cease the dumping of mixed waste near the Kadamba Bus Stand.

MMC councillor Mahesh Amonkar shared insights from the meeting, stating that the Chairperson and Chief Officer had informed councillors and supervisors about the orders to discontinue waste dumping in the specified area. Amonkar also noted that measures were being taken to address the issue of coconut palm leaves, including the provision of machinery for their disposal.

Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar explained that the meeting primarily aimed to devise and implement plans for maintaining cleanliness in the commercial capital during the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
