MARGAO: Margao Municipal New Market witnessed uproar on Friday morning over the construction of an illegal stall with rolling shutter.
The development evoked strong opposition from the Margao New Market Traders Association led by Vinod Shirodkar, who set a deadline till 1 pm to remove the shutter or face action.
MMC Vice Chairperson Dadi Mayenkar also rushed to the market to take stock of the situation, even as he promised action by the civic body against the illegality. Not taking any chances and to send a message loud and clear to the erring businessmen, the Margao municipal workers later got the shutter removed from the site.
Shirodkar pointed out that work on the shutter and stall was going on till late in the night. He told the MMC vice chairperson that the civic body should henceforth take up the responsibility of security arrangements in the market. “Presently, the security arrangements were looked after by the market association, but we now feel that the civic body should take over the security arrangements so that illegal work is not allowed during late nights,” he added.
Shirodkar later lodged a complaint with the Margao police alleging that the trader allegedly interfered with the poles of the market shed while erecting the stall with the rolling shutter.
