MARGAO: Following the recent incident at Sonsoddo, where a portion a wall of the shed of the waste treatment plant collapsed, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has put a mechanism in place to solve the issue and that of waste management.

While addressing mediapersons on Monday, MMC Chief Officer (CO) Rohit Kadam first referred to the recent site inspection of the shed that was conducted by professors from the Goa College of Engineering (GEC). It may be recalled that another portion of the shed had collapsed a few months ago.

“These GEC professors were the authorized professionals to give their recommendations regarding the structural stability of the shed with respect to the collapsed portion. They had recommended removing the area of the wall that had collapsed and its adjoining portions to avoid any loss to life,” said Kadam.

“We had already floated a tender of Rs 3.2 crore for renovating the entire shed which covers an area of 5,000 square metres. However this broken compound wall was not included in that so a separate tender will be floated for that,” Kadam added.

He added the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) is floating another tender, which is also pending administrative approval, for appointing a new agency to treat the daily waste generated from MMC’s jurisdiction, which amounts to 38 tons of wet waste and 20 tons of dry waste.

“Finally, the legacy waste lying in the shed has to be cleared. This is being removed and bioremediated by the GWMC-appointed agency,” Kadam added.
