Margao Muslim leader, NGO hail SC ruling

MARGAO: The Goa Muslims Forum has called the Supreme Court ruling on the triple talaq as a good judgement.

MARGAO: The Goa Muslims Forum has called the Supreme Court ruling on the triple talaq as a good judgement.
“However, the triple talaq issue is being used by some people as a political weapon,” said Iftekar Shaikh, president of Goa Muslims Forum.
“In Islam and specifically in triple talaq system, there is a waiting period and also a proper system where both the husband and wife are given equal time to decide. However, it was distorted by some who utter talaq thrice at a time which is not right,”
There is Uniform Civil Code in Goa but in other States of India there has to be a strong law to protect the women against triple talaq. There has to be a change in the personal law too for making compensation or alimony which will complete the laws.
The misuse angle has to be looked into by the Court.
Auda Viegas, convenor of Bailancho Saad, said, “This is an excellent judgement and we hail the decision to strike down triple talaq. The Muslim women never came ahead to object since there were many constraints. However, we congratulate the decision for having restored the constitutional right of the women.”
“We have fought issues of several women on this front but never got back up to give justice. However, the decision now empowers us to make efforts to actually save the women from the injustice,” she added.
Meanwhile, Muzaffar Shaikh, president of SDPI-Goa, said, “We have not gone through the judgement fully but will soon release a press release stating our stand on the decision of the Supreme Court.”
