VASCO: Muslim intellectuals and mosque committee heads from Mormugao Taluka on Tuesday gave a mixed reaction to the Supreme Court verdict on Triple Talaaq.
The Supreme Court held that triple talaq being practiced by the Muslim community as ‘unconstitutional’, ‘arbitrary’ and ‘not part of Islam.’
Justices Kurien Joseph, Rohinton Fali Nariman and Udey Umesh Lalit held that triple talaq is not integral to Islam, is banned in law and lacks approval of the Shariat.
Speaking to Herald, Iqbal Mohidin Trustee of Masjid-e-Noor, Alto Dabolim hailed the Supreme Court of India verdict invalidating triple talaq. “In My personal opinion, a right verdict is given by the SC in right direction to stop wrong practice. There is no place for triple talaq in one sitting in Islam. It is spread of over a period of time and the process is mentioned in the holy Quran,” he said.
“The clergy and community should have a deep introspection on the ill effects of the same. That the apex court has given its verdict, it is high time that clergy should declare triple talaq in one sitting as null and void. A welcome move by SC in all its wisdom, as it has also upheld personal laws the status of fundamental right protected under the right to practice its religion under Article 25 of the Constitution,” Mohidin said.
However, Sheikh Maqsood, the President Madina Masjid in Vasco, said, “We are not happy with the SC verdict as we follow Shairat law and Quran. In Quran, the prescribed method for triple talaq is that the man pronounces the word talaq three times over the course of three months. In this way, he has the option to retract his statement twice before he finally decides on a separation. This is done to ensure that divorce isn’t happening in a fit of momentous rage and is a well thought out decision.”
Herald also tried to contact other religious and mosque committee heads from Mormugao Taluka, however, many of them sought time to first understand the SC verdict and then react.
