MARGAO: Confusion prevailed at the Old market circle on the eve of the feast scheduled on Sunday, as Margao Municipal officials razed down stalls erected close to the circle.
Angry vendors demanded to know from Market Inspector Mohan Arlekar how the civic body could target them when stalls have come up all over the area right from the KTC bus stand to Old market circle and along the Ravindra Bhavan road.
“The market inspector should have told us not to erect the stalls around the old market circle when we started the work in the morning. Suddenly, the civic workers made their presence felt this evening and removed the stalls,” they complained.
The market inspector, however, said that he acted as per the orders of Margao Municipal Chief Officer Deepali Naik.
He pointed out that the chief officer had issued clear cut instructions not to allow any stalls within a radius of 20 meters from the old market circle from the traffic point of view.
When media person drew his attention to the stalls being erected right outside the Ravindra Bhavan complex along side the road, Arlekar had no answer other than saying that he was acting as per the municipal directions.
