Margao plays host to Dahi Handi festivities

The Commercial Capital on Thursday played host to Dahi-Handi festivities, with local youth clubs organizing the competitions at many places across the city.
The competition at Pajifond organised by United Youth Club, Margao for the 11th consecutive year drew huge crowds, besides a host of participating groups. Asha Kamat, the wife of Chief Minister Digambar Kamat was present on the dais along with MMC Chairperson Savio Coutinho and other dignitaries.
Sources in the know said that a participant was left injured after the human pyramid collapsed on him at the competition at Old Station Road. The 16-year old was immediately rushed to the Hospicio, from where he was shifted to the GMC, Bambolim, sources said.
Meanwhile, traffic in the Commercial Capital was plunged into chaos on Thursday evening with Dahi Handi festivities on the city roads literally held the traffic to ransom.
The authorities either had a hard time to control the traffic situation in some places, while the absence of the men-in-uniform was felt at other places.
Bumper to bumper traffic was witnessed on many roads, the worst hit being the Aquem-Margao road. At the Hari Mandir road junction, the traffic police were conspicuous by their absence, even as lone home guard personnel failed to control the worsening situation.
It was only after curtains came down on the festivities late this evening that the traffic was restored.
