MARGAO: Recent promotions coupled with transfers of police sub-inspectors have left the Margao police station virtually crippled, with the police station presently being manned by a lone Police Inspector, assisted by two PSIs.
The women cell attached to the Margao police station has no in-charge to man the affairs after the promotion of incumbent PSI Rupa Karade to the post of Police inspector. PSI Rupa along with Pravin Gawas have been promoted as police inspectors in the recent promotion order issued by the government.
The strength of the Margao police station had in the past had come down to four PSIs after the transfer of PSI Manguesh Naik to Colva police station and the suspension of PSI Diego Gracias.
Senior police officers admit in private that Margao police station requires minimum 8-10 PSIs given the huge work load and the number of complaints received at the police station on a daily basis. Sources in the know said that the police station has been facing a manpower shortage vis-a-vis the constabulary, but successive governments have only paid lip service to the need to beef up the manpower requirements.
“The PS should atleast get the bare minimum staff to effectively meet its requirements for basic functioning. Margao’s status as the commercial capital coupled with its rail and road connectivity makes the city susceptible to crimes,” remarked a senior officer.
