MARGAO: The discontinuation of accepting cheques against payments to Margao Municipal Council has not gone down well for some. Some city dwellers who went to pay their dues said that their cheques were not accepted. The MMC has informed that in view of cheques bouncing it has stopped accepting cheques.
A city dweller who went to the MMC to pay the dues by cheque expressed displeasure over the non-acceptance of payment by cheque. The MMC in its defence has said that it has stopped accepting cheques since September 2018. The administration has studied the matter after dishonour of many cheques which ultimately went to courts. Therefore, the MMC has stopped accepting payments by cheques.
The administration has said that earlier the payments by cheque were accepted as they were less in numbers. Now there are payments of house taxes and others and with experience of bounced cheques, the MMC has decided not to accept cheques.
The MMC has mentioned that it has started other means of e-payments like card payments and others.
