MARGAO: Margao’s New Market traders on Wednesday cried foul over the apathy of the civic and other authorities to the host of problem plaguing the prime market area of the commercial capital.
A delegation of the traders led by President of New Market Traders Association Vinod Shirodkar had a meeting with MMC Chief Officer, Narayan Sawant and attended by Margao traffic PI Prabodh Shirwaikar and Assistant Executive Engineer, electricity Deepak Naik this morning.
The traders contended that most of the commercial buildings around the market area have violated the parking provision, causing traffic and parking hazards in the centre of trade and business. He said while the Civic body have turned a blind eye to the illegalities, the traffic cops only harass the traders by challaning the customers visiting the market. “This has to start immediately. The Municipality and the police should put their act together and work out a solution”, Vinod demanded.
The traders further sought to know the fate of the overhead planned at the old fish market around half a decade ago. “We had suggested the overhead tank to provide dedicated water supply to the new market in times of fire emergencies. Sadly, the project is just dragging ion for the last five year”, he rued.
MMC Chief Officer Narayan Sawant and PI Prabodh Sawaikar gave a patient hearing to the grievances put forth by the traders and assured to work out a solution. “We have heard their grievances and efforts will be made to solve the parking woes in the market area,” Sawant told the media after the meeting.
