Goa’s lone wholesale fish market at Margao appears a neglected lot, though the new fishing season has begun from Sunday.
The market has literally become an eyesore for want of any waste disposal mechanism.
That the market is craving for attention is evident by the fact that a heap of thermocol waste is lying unattended for days now. This waste has found its way into the adjacent low lying paddy fields and water bodies for want of its collection and disposal.
The South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) which owns and maintains the wholesale fish market appears to have run out of ideas in tackling the thermocol waste.
Hygiene is another aspect that has not been given any attention by the SGDPA, so it seems. In fact, excess fish was found dumped within the market premises, creating a stinking environment.
Foul odour has enveloped the market area, while waste fish water has found its way in the neighbouring, offering a perfect breeding ground for vector borne diseases.
He pathetic situation has evoked strong protests from the residents of neighbouring Madel. President of the Citizens Welfare Committee, Savio Dias said the SGPDA should immediately tackle the unhygienic conditions at the PDA market.
“The residents of Madel had been facing the unhygienic environment since the wholesale market was shifted more than half a decade ago. The PDA Chairman and the Member Secretary should take note of the messy situation in the market”, Dias demanded.
With the new fishing season beginning from August 1, the wholesale fish market will play host to hundreds of pick-up vans, bringing tons of fish from the state jetties, besides dozens of vehicles from across the state borders.
