MARGAO, APRIL 19
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat had recently said that the ugly side of Margao can be overcome by putting in place a system to manage garbage disposal.
But, the authorities appear to have still not worked out any mechanism in place to tackle the burning garbage problem.
The ugly situation came to the fore at Aquem late Monday evening when three overflowing garbage bins were found right on the main road near a place of worship.
Margao Municipal Chairperson Savio Coutinho was quick to defend the presence of overflowing bins right on the road by saying the bins with wheels were meant for door-to-door garbage collection, adding that the bins might have strayed on the road after stray dogs feasted on the waste.
He, however, agreed on the need to put a system in place to ensure that the city is free from the menace of garbage.
The Chief Minister had last week called for a mechanism to get rid of ugly Margao by deploying trolleys to lift away waste from areas frequented by the people. “Trolleys along with additional manpower should solve the problem of garbage in the heart of the city”, Kamat said, while urging the Margao Civic body to utilise the additional workers sanctioned by the government for garbage disposal.
