Margao’s Gonzaco calls it a day, quits

Says he hasn’t buckled to pressure or blackmail, DMA to process resignation in 7 days

MARGAO: After months of posturing, pressure, allegations and counter allegations Chairperson of Margao Municipal Council Gonzaco Rebello finally resigned from his post, on Tuesday morning.
He was under immense public and legal pressure for his alleged illegally constructed restaurant in Mungul-Colva. The chairperson said that he tendered his resignation to the Director of Municipal Administration. The DMA will take seven days to process the resignation and relieve Rebello from the post.
Rebello’s undisclosed action to tender his resignation has shocked his fellow councilors. Sources informed that the outgoing chairperson has tendered the resignation following immense pressure from a highly placed personality. However, when asked, whether he was pressurized or blackmailed to step down, Rebello replied “There is no blackmailing or pressure on me, I have resigned with full humility”.
Rebello further informed that on his way out, he has got Rs 2,03,63,000 worth of works passed from the DMA, on Tuesday.
MMC Chief Officer Naveen S.L (IAS)  had recently acted on the directions of the court and ordered the demolition of the illegal restaurant of Rebello. This demolition was stopped by the urban development minister and had invited lots of criticism recently.
