Margao’s jam-packed market areas could lead to COVID super spread!

Wholesale Fish Market and Pimpal Katta witnessed no social distancing and most customers without masks

MARGAO: It appears that the people are taking things lightly and letting their guard down as major violation of COVID norms was reported in Margao’s market areas, despite the State’s commercial capital witnessing a spurt in coronavirus cases for the past several days.

The wholesale fish market at Margao, besides other markets in the commercial capital witnessed jam packed public gatherings. Shockingly, no social distancing was maintained as several customers were noticed without masks.

Early morning Pimpal Katta saw a massive rush of people wherein mostly fruits vendors and wholesalers were noticed violating the SOPs. These COVID norm violations could lead to a super spread of the coronavirus.

Speaking to Herald several residents expressed their concerns with regards to the people taking things lightly and letting their guard down.

“The rush at the market places needs to be stopped or it will cause major health issues with regards to COVID-19. The government authorities need to keep a check on such business activities wherein people violate SOPs”, said Shivanand Shirodkar from Margao.

He claimed that a gathering of migrant labourers is seen near the Margao Municipal building and a few of them are noticed wearing masks.

The wholesale fish market at Madel, Margao is another area wherein no COVID-19 norms are followed. A massive rush of people engaged in fishing activities can be noticed here.

The recent data released by the Health Services indicates that the number of COVID positive cases is high in Margao. Margao Municipal Council has already issued notice to the public to avoid unnecessary travel to the town. However, the civic body is yet to initiate strict action against those violating COVID norms.

Peter Fernandes, a Fatorda resident, appealed to the people to follow COVID norms to stop the spread of coronavirus.

“Yes, it is shocking to see the rush at the wholesale fish market and other public places in Margao”, he said.

He said even fast food stalls are heavily packed with customers without following social distancing and other norms.
