Margao’s New market fire: No lessons learnt

Thirteen days later, agencies yet to come up with pro-active steps to combat such incidents

MARGAO: Thirteen days after a major fire engulfed Margao’s congested New Market, neither the authorities have ascertained the cause of the fire nor has the civic body taken a call on the location of the overhead water tank proposed to tone up fire fighting arrangements in the commercial capital.
Neither the power department has given its opinion on the cause behind the fire, nor has the Margao police come with any conclusion whether it was an act of arson or sabotage. Fire Officer Gill de Souza, who had dashed off letters to the power and police departments seeking their opinion on the exact cause behind the fire incident, pointed out that the Margao fire station has till date not received any. “The cause of the market fire remains unknown till date for want of an opinion from these agencies”, the fire officer said.
In fact, sources in the fire services said that the power department normally gives the opinion that the cause of fire cannot be ascertained. In the instant case, since all the electrical appliances were gutted, the task of ascertaining the cause has become all the more difficult, they said.
Meanwhile, the civic body is groping in the dark over the final location of the proposed overhead water tank, which was first proposed way back in 2009 to tone up the fire fighting infrastructure in and around the city markets.
Last week saw the Municipal, Fire and PWD officials inspecting the Gandhi market area to explore the possibility of setting up the overhead tank, but a final decision has eluded the authorities till date.
The MMC is not enthusiastic about building the overhead tank at the old fish market on the grounds that the tank will come in the way of its ambitious plan to construct a multi-storey parking lot on the vacant land.
