PANJIM: The rate of traffic accident deaths and casualties has witnessed a marginal decline in the first nine months of this year as compared to the same period last year.
The report also indicates that fines collected from several thousand traffic violators have been more in the first 10 months of 2013 than the corresponding period last year. According to the figures compiled by the traffic department, a total of 182 fatal accidents were recorded from January to September 2013 as against 199 of the same period during the preceding year. Similarly, this year has witnessed 201 serious accidents as compared to 205 last year.
If broken down by calendar year, in 2012 there were a total 4312 accidents registered of which 271 were fatal, 287 serious, 389 persons suffered serious injuries while 1697 sustained minor injuries.
More so, 154 riders and 28 pillion riders, and 16 drivers were killed during this period. Interestingly, around Rs 2.50 crore was collected as fines from violators including those for not wearing helmets between January and October 15, 2013 as compared to about Rs 2.42 crore during the same period last year. The maximum penalty was collected for rash and negligent driving followed by violation for tinted glass.
Last year, a total amount of Rs 29,32,850 was collected for rash and negligent driving as against Rs 29,94,850 for the same period this year. The fines collected for tinted front windscreens and side windows of four-wheelers have been more this year with a collection of Rs 29,82,450 as compared to Rs 16,22,050 during the same period last year.
