Marital discord led to Agonda murder: Police

Probe revealed that Alfred suspected his wife Sonia had an extra-marital affair

MARGAO:  The investigation by the Canacona Police into the Agonda murder case on Sunday revealed a marital discord between the victim Sonia Monteiro e Pereira and her husband Alfred Pereira as he suspected her of having an extra-marital affair.

It may be recalled that in a bizarre incident reported on Saturday, Canacona Police arrested 42-year-old Alfred, a Malkarnem resident for allegedly shooting his 35-year-old wife Sonia to death with a gun at his in-laws residence at Agonda. 

Canacona Police said based on the complaint lodged by Sonia’s mother Amelia Pires, an offence under Section 302 of the IPC and Section 25 r/w Section 3 of the Arms Act has been registered .The accused after committing the murder surrendered before Canacona Police on Saturday night.

Canacona Police said the accused was arrested after he confessed to the murder. 

Meanwhile, the Canacona Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) remanded the accused to six days police custody, said police and added that the post-mortem report is awaited.

The police team visited the crime scene spot with the help of the forensic team and gathered evidence. The police conducted the panchanama in presence of two witnesses and seized the weapon.

It may be recalled that South Goa SP Pankaj Kumar Singh had said, “On Saturday evening, we received information from the Canacona Health Centre that a woman was declared brought dead at around 8.45 pm on account of a gunshot injury following a dispute.”

Canacona PI Tulshidas Naik and his staff visited the crime scene following a complaint.

The police said Alfred shot Sonia, who sustained grievous injuries and was taken to Canacona Health Centre. However, she succumbed to her injuries.

The incident took place around at 8.30 pm when Sonia returned home from work. There were arguments between Sonia and Alfred wherein the latter, in a fit of anger, removed a gun and shot Sonia at point black range, the police had said.
