MARGAO: An unknown man wearing a mask and armed with deadly weapons made a brazen attempt to murder a ward member of the Rumdamol-Davorlim village panchayat. Late at night, the Maina-Curtorim police made an arrest in connection with the incident, apprehending one Ayub Khan.
Based on the complaint lodged by Vinayak Volvoikar, 31, a resident of Ward Number 3 of the panchayat, the police have registered a case under IPC Sections 427 and 307.

According to the complaint filed at the Maina-Curtorim police station, the incident occurred on the road leading to Swami Samarth Mandir in Rumdamol-Davorlim. The complainant was seated in his car when an unidentified individual, masked and with their face covered, approached the vehicle. The assailant proceeded to break the driver’s side window glass using a metal plate, and then attacked the complainant with a sharp knife, which struck the car seat and became lodged in it. The assailant swiftly fled the scene.
PSI Deepesh Shetkar is leading the investigation into the case. The motive behind the attack remains unknown at this stage, and the investigation is ongoing. However, the knife used in the crime has yet to be recovered.
Meanwhile a group of agitated locals reportedly vandalised a mutton shop in Rumdamol, in protest against allegedly illegal activities. They called for the closure of these shops dealing in red meat, urging the panchayat to take action.
Subsequently, a rival group assembled in Rumdamol, leading to a tense situation. As a precautionary measure, the police deployed additional forces at the scene.
PI Ravi Dessai from Maina-Curtorim police station attempted to mediate and urged both groups to maintain harmony. Senior police officers from Margao also arrived and engaged in discussions with the groups, requesting the presence of five representatives from each group at the police station on Monday. No arrests have been made so far, and the investigation is ongoing. Night patrolling has been intensified in the village.
