MARGAO: The health services in association with the local panchayat body on Tuesday launched a massive exercise in Aquem-Baxio village to stop the spread of malaria in the village.
Six teams constituted by the Curtorim Primary Health Centre collected as many as 300 slides in the day-long drive and found around 8-10 fever cases. The drive also brought to the fore a host of mosquito breeding sites in the village, including abandoned tyres.
Curtorim Primary Health Officer Dr Rajendra Borkar informed that around eight show cause notices have been issued to parties, who have failed to comply with directions issued by health officials a few days ago. “We have decided to crack a whip against the erring parties, while at the same time launch a massive information campaign to stop transmission of the disease,” he said.
Aquem-Baixo Sarpanch Sharon Quadros along with panchayat members accompanied the health officials as they toured the vulnerable points in the village. Local MLA and Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado also made his presence felt and extended his cooperation to the health officials and the panchayat body to take the drive to its logical conclusion. “We have sent the fever cases slides for testing. Further action will follow based on the test report,” Dr Borkar said.
