CANACONA: A number of coconut trees were uprooted while protection walls were destroyed due to soil erosion, as the rough sea struck the northern coast of Agonda on Thursday.
Sources at Agonda informed that huge waves hit some residences and about a dozen coconut trees and saplings were uprooted at Dhavalkhazan-Agonda.
Protective walls erected by residents at Palolem beach were also razed by the strong waves which have continuously pounded the coastline over the last three days.
Agonda Panch Tippu Pagi said the sea had virtually entered into the residential areas after causing vast sand erosion. “The government officials should inspect the area and take protective measures to arrest the mass-scale erosion,” added Pagi.
Incidentally, the same area was affected by pounding waves some eight years ago and authorities had planned protective measures, as the entire residential area is precariously located between sea and a rivulet.
“In view of damages to some houses and uprooting of trees eight years ago, a meagre relief of Rs 10,000 was reportedly distributed to a few affected households and the issue of erecting protective measures was forgotten,” informed a resident.
Meanwhile, the incessant rains have resulted in the Chapoli Dam in Canacona reaching its capacity on Thursday.
Chapoli dam is considered safe cause it flows through the Chapli rivulet into Devabhaga River and to the Arabian Sea.
through the Palolem River.
