MARGAO: On the first day of the new academic year, there was major traffic congestion in the commercial capital

of Margao, due to indiscipline among the parents

pertaining to parking of their vehicles around schools,

on Monday.

A team from Margao traffic cell, led by Gautam Salunke, Police Inspector, Traffic Cell-Margao was unable to take control the mess as the parents were in no mood to follow the traffic rules. It seems that there is no positive sign of changes in the traffic and parking issue and the volunteers from the Parent-Teachers-Associations of the concerned schools are yet to come on the field to monitor the situation.

It is pertinent to note that recently Margao Municipal Traffic and Road Safety committee held a meeting with all the representatives of the schools based in the commercial capital and deliberate on the issue of traffic congestion during the peak school hours.

However, on the first day of reopening of schools the town witnessed major traffic congestion at several locations including at Lohia High School, Comba and other places. The traffic mess near South Goa Police headquarters, where two high schools –Fatima and Loyola are located at a very short distance from each other, was so uncontrollable that even pedestrians were unable to walk on that street. Speaking to reporters, Alex Fernandes, parent, stated that the

major cause for the traffic congestion on Monday was indiscipline in parking by a section of parents.

“Many vehicles were noticed parked in the middle of the road resulting in major traffic mess. There should be some discipline among the parents, which will help to resolve the traffic issue during the peak hours of schools,” he stated.

Police Inspector Gautam Salunke said that traffic congestion was witnessed despite giving guidelines to the representatives of the educational institutions based in the commercial capital of Margao. “Managing the traffic is possible but the parents also need to extend their support”, he stated.

Meanwhile, an issue pertaining to the old bus stand which is yet to be utilized for the parking or drop and pick up of the school children has come to light on Monday.

Citizens have also demanded that this space at the old bus stand should be utilized keeping in mind the traffic congestion in the town and more specifically during school hours.
