Master plans drawn for 4 rivers to monitor future water deficiency

The State Government has prepared master plans for four rivers of the State to take care of future water deficiency. Water storage schemes would be implemented for Mandovi, Zuari, Talpona and Galgibag rivers with which, the water deficiency till 2050 would be taken care of.
Speaking to Herald on Wednesday S T Nadkarni, Chief Engineer, Water Resources Department said the master plans consist of various water storage schemes that would be implemented for four rivers, in phases. He however said, they are still investigating into feasibility of the projects of water storage, they plan to have on the four rivers.
Currently, 12-14 such projects are being investigated and that would be carried out in phases, he said adding, implementation of some schemes have already started for Talpona and Galgibag.
120 BANDHARAS COMPLETED: To augment water availability in the State, during last four years, the department have been building bandharas on rivers and tributaries.
The department has completed construction of about 120 bandharas whereas 40-50 more are in the process of approval, told Nadkarni.
Construction of bandharas have helped improve supply of water in the State. The capacity of Opa water plant has now increased 140 MLD. There are about 18 bandharas on Khandepar river. Bandharas help water conservation in a big way and stop salinity, he added.
