MARGAO: A godown storing match boxes and food items at Malbhat was engulfed in a fire in the wee hours of Friday, raising once again the question of the location of the establishment in a residential locality.
Timely intervention by the fire services helped to contain the fire after two hours. Though property worth around Rs 4.5 lakh has been destroyed in the fire, fire services said that property worth Rs 20 lakh was saved in the operation.
The incident, however, has raised concerns amongst the citizens over the presence of the match box godown in a residential locality which had caught fire over a month ago.
Fire services rushed to the match box godown at around 2.15 am on Friday upon receiving a call from the control room. Two fire tenders were used to bring the flames under control and the operation ended only at around 4 am, informed Fire Officer Gill de Souza.
Freedom fighter Gurunath Kelekar, however, has demanded action against the match box godown located in a residential locality. He said his letter to the District Collector, South, to shift the godown has received no response from the District Collector.
