Catholics commemorate Maundy Thursday on the Thursday before Easter. With Maundy Thursday begins the Tridum of the passion, death and resurrection of Lord Jesus. Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with his disciples before he faced his death. At the Passover meal, Jesus washed the feet of His disciples in an extraordinary display of humility. He then commanded them to do the same for each other.
Maundy is a shortened form of the mandatum in Latin which means mandate. On this day Christ gave the mandate to his disciples at the Last Supper. This mandate was “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another”.
Churches observe Maundy Thursday with Mass, a Communion service and washing of the feet of 12 persons, representing the apostles of Jesus. These traditions help Christians reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus and his commandment to love and serve others.
