VALPOI: Women from Mauxi have cultivated agriculture lands lying fallow since past several years by planting watermelon seeds.
This initiative is being led by Mauxi Self Help Group and the watermelon seeds were planted on National Farmers Day to make the day a memorable one.
The watermelon seeds have been planted in 1300 square meters of land.
“We want to make our village an agriculture village. Since last one year, we have started doing the agriculture in our village again. Now we are cultivating the different types of vegetables on the land lying unused since past many years. To make the Kisan Day a memorable one, we have planted watermelon seeds. No one has planted watermelon in Sattari till date. We are the ones first to do so,” President Self Help Group Shubhangi Gaonkar said.
“Nowadays, we are not getting the organically cultivated produce in the market and also the vegetable rates are increasing day by day in the State. So, we have decided to focus on agriculture and we will grow the different types of vegetables in our village. Already we have started growing the different types of vegetables in our village. Now we have done the watermelon cultivation,” a woman said.
